Do Sealed Motorcycle Chains Still Need Lubrication?

Motorcycle Chain O-RingIt’s a common question: if you’re running an O-ring, X-ring or Z-ring chain, do you still need to lubricate it?

The short answer is yes.

While sealed chains are designed to retain factory grease inside the most critical internal components, they are not completely maintenance-free. The sealing rings (O/X/Z) protect the grease between the pin and bushing, but they do not cover every moving part of the chain.

Where the Movement Happens

A sealed chain has two key areas of motion:

1. Pin-to-bushing contact (sealed)
This area is protected by the rubber rings and factory grease. It requires no additional lubrication.

2. Roller-to-bushing contact (unsealed)
This is where the roller spins as it engages the sprocket teeth. This surface is exposed and must be lubricated regularly.

Every time your chain wraps around the sprocket, the rollers rotate against the bushings. Over the course of even a moderate ride, that adds up to thousands of rotations at an unprotected friction point.

Why Lubrication Matters

Keeping the roller-to-bushing contact properly lubricated:

  • Reduces friction and mechanical drag
  • Prevents premature sprocket wear
  • Minimises corrosion
  • Helps maintain seal integrity
  • Improves drivetrain efficiency

If this area dries out, the rollers stop rotating freely and begin sliding against the sprocket teeth - accelerating wear and robbing power.

Where to Apply Chain Lube

The ideal application point is along the lower run of the chain. If access is limited, applying lube at the top of the rear sprocket also works well. After spraying, rotate the rear wheel several times to help the lubricant work its way into the roller area.

Precision application tools, like the Oinker chain lube applicator, are designed to direct lubricant exactly where it’s needed - targeting the inner plates and roller edges rather than coating the tyre, wheel or swingarm.

How Often Should You Lube?

Always follow your motorcycle manufacturer’s recommendations. As a general guide, most riders lubricate every few hundred km - or sooner after wet-weather riding, washing the bike, or dusty off-road use.

Even sealed chains need attention. A little maintenance goes a long way in protecting your drivetrain and keeping your ride smooth.
