Frame sliders are designed to spread the impact of a collision across the frame and into the engine, which is often a more rigid construction than the bike's frame. It should be noted that the bike would probably slide best without any form of slider in most collisions, but the negative is that there's no means to safeguard the chassis from being structurally injured or gouged in a crash.
